Why do you want to lose weight?
A powerful "why" can help you find the
"how" to lose weight
I have heard several motivational speakers on
the topic of financial success say; "If you have a strong
enough "why" then the "how" is easy". I wonder how that
might translate over to pursuing weight loss success.
Why do you want to lose weight? List all of
the reasons why you want to lose weight. It could be any
number of the following or maybe even a reason unique to
you.
Your reasons may be
similar to the ones above or may be something totally
different. The point is to find what your reasons are and
identify the ones that are shallow and the ones that are
powerful. Please understand that I am not using the word
"shallow" in a derogatory sense. The word shallow in the
context of this article means something that is not a
powerful motivator for you. For example – Losing weight for
health reasons might be on your list but if you are in
relatively good health – chances are that reason alone is
not going to motivate you on a very deep emotional level.
Here is a story to give
you an example of how powerful an emotional "why" can be.
Everyone in my family smoked except me. My father never was
able to quit, my mother died of COPD and never quit, my
sister and one of my brothers has tried numerous times and
neither has been able to quit. The lone exception is my
oldest brother. He witnessed his daughter at a very young
age toddle over to his ashtray and put a cigarette butt in
her mouth. The thought of his little girl becoming a smoker
so upset him that he told his wife he would never smoke
again. To this day he has never smoked again. His little
girl has since grown, graduated college and is a very happy
non-smoking teacher.
Losing weight gets a bit
complicated though. It is not always a matter of will power.
There are things to consider such as your health, your
metabolism, your knowledge of what is healthy and what is
not, and many other factors. Also – You always have to eat.
You don't just stop eating like you would stop smoking.
Please keep this in mind when you find your powerful "why".
Seek out professional help and lose weight in the safest,
healthiest way you can. Utilize resources such as your
doctor, weight watchers, TOPS, ediets, Nutrisystem, local
gyms, and dieticians. In other words; once you have
identified your powerful "why", let the professionals help
you with the "how".
Having a powerful "why"
can turn into a major motivator for some people to lose
weight. If you discover a powerful "why" for yourself then
find a reminder of your "why" that you can use when needed.
Your reminder may be something like a photograph or it may
be something more symbolic and personal in nature to you.
Just make sure that when you see it – it reminds you of your
"why".
Place your reminder on
your refrigerator, your exercise machine, or on your mirror.
You will begin to program your brain for weight loss
success. You will also be developing healthy habits that
will support you in maintaining your weight loss for the
rest of your life.
I wish for you the best
of health!
