 Weight loss 101

A recent statistic stated that only 5 percent of 50 million dieters will ever keep off the weight that they lose. Here are some weight loss basics that will help you to be a permanent loser.

Weight loss basic number 1. Remember that permanent, healthy weight loss is all about the lifestyle. Rarely does a fad diet lead to permanent, healthy, lasting change. Your mission must be to change your lifestyle in such a way that it is supportive of your desired body.

You can’t have a 200 pound lifestyle and have a 110 pound body.

Here is how to change your lifestyle:

Education – Learn about foods and the effects they have on your body. Read about the effects that a healthy diet and an unhealthy diet have on your body. Become an expert on what goes into your mouth.

Substitution – Start substituting unhealthy foods for healthy foods. This builds habits that will be supportive of your new healthy lifestyle. Start slowly and build healthy, permanent change. You will find that your tastes will change and you will no longer desire those unhealthy foods.

Exercise – Find an activity you enjoy and perform it on a consistent basis. Take walking for example – If you enjoy walking and make it a priority to walk every day for a year – walking will become a value in your life. Priorities change but Values remain constant. Lean and healthy people started out by making health a priority – now a healthy lifestyle is a value to them.

Weight loss basic number 2. You lose weight by consuming fewer calories than you burn – you gain weight by consuming more calories than you burn.

Eat smaller portions and exercise more. If your appetite is still out of control; eat more calorie sparse foods such as fresh vegetables or some fruits. Examine your current diet and find ways to cut the calories. Examine your current lifestyle and find ways to burn more calories. Any little bit helps. Be consistent.

Some ways to cut calories from your diet are: avoid any beverages except water, opt for baked instead of fried, snack on raw vegetables instead of chips or cakes, and cut your portion sizes. As you learn more about healthy eating you will find more opportunities to cut calories.

Some ways to burn more calories are: park far away from your destination so you have to walk, walk instead of drive, take the stairs, and push mow the lawn instead of ride. These are just a few – I am sure you can think of many that apply to your life.

Weight loss basic number 3. You must control your appetite and speed your metabolism. You can control your appetite and speed your metabolism by eating 5 or 6 smaller meals throughout the day rather than a couple of large meals. An example of a small, satisfying meal would be a low fat yogurt and a banana. This is a delicious and healthy meal that will stick with you for hours.

By no means is this meant to be a static article. Check back to this page for updates and reinforcements of the basics. Permanent, healthy, natural weight loss is a worthy goal that will bring you increased health and vitality. Health and vitality can become and unshakable value in your life by starting with making weight loss basics a priority.

I wish for you the best of health!
