This book is for anyone who has
avoided beginning an exercise program for fear of having to be a
“fanatic”. This book will teach you the value of such seemingly
insignificant things as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or
just walking for 10 minutes 3 times per day.
Doctor Simon does an incredible
job of teaching the benefits of exercise from a medical standpoint but
explains them in a way that is easy to understand.
This book will teach you self
assessment tests for balance, flexibility, strength, cardiopulmonary
fitness, body fat, and cardiac risk. These tests will help you
determine your starting point on to your new life of fitness, health,
and ideal weight.
You will be guided through the
different types of exercise starting with what Doctor Simon calls
cardiometabolic exercise. You will then be guided through strength
training, flexibility, and exercises for balance.
Dr. Simon constructs different
pyramids (think of the food pyramids) that are made up of nutrition,
cardiometabolic exercise, strength training, balance training,
flexibility, preventative medical care, and stress control. Dr. Simon
then goes on to show you how to construct pyramids for different
goals. These goals include weight loss, sports and competition, and
people with medical conditions or who are advancing in age.
My favorite parts of this book
were Dr. Simon’s lessons on exercise and heart disease, hypertension,
stroke, cancer, diabetes, aging, mental function, and obesity. I also
very much enjoyed the sections on injuries that were explained in a
way that really helped me understand exactly what is happening when we
hurt.
I think you will be very pleased
with the education you will receive from this book. Dr. Simon cites
many studies throughout the book that will reinforce your new
behaviors. You will finish this book with more knowledge about health,
fitness, and weight loss than most people who you have probably
considered experts.
Wishing you the best of
health,
Bill
