Stomach Balloon
Have you heard of this bariatric
procedure?
Gastric ballooning is a
procedure where a stomach balloon is inserted into the
stomach through the mouth and then filled with liquid.
One
maker of the stomach balloon states that it is only left in
place for six months to avoid corrosion. It is not yet
approved by the FDA but is being performed in Europe.
Proponents of the
stomach balloon say that it is safe, effective, and lower
cost than a costly gastric bypass surgery. The procedure
reportedly can be done in 15 minutes and it is successful in
filling up the stomach so that the user eats less. Also some
are saying that it can be used for a patient to lose some
weight to prepare for other bariatric surgeries.
Opponents of the surgery
say that it is not yet a proven technique and some even say
that the stomach will learn to compensate for the presence
of the balloon and no lifestyle changes will be realized.
Opponents also say that after the balloon is removed the
patient will more than likely gain the weight back.
Side effects are
reported to be nausea and vomiting and of course there are
risks involved with any weight loss surgery procedure. Some
experts are urging the public to realize that this is not a
cosmetic procedure but rather a procedure designed for obese
people.
