Obesity, Ghrelin, Leptin
What is the connection?
Perhaps you have heard
of ghrelin and leptin in relation to obesity and are
wondering exactly what the obesity, ghrelin, leptin
connection is. Here is a lay guide to help you understand.
Leptin and ghrelin are
two fairly recently discovered hormones that have two
different supposed actions in the body.
Leptin is a hormone
which suppresses the appetite and Ghrelin is reported to be
a powerful appetite stimulant.
It appears that if you
have an abundance of Ghrelin then you may have the urge to
eat even when you don’t need to and likewise, when you don’t
have enough leptin you may also have an abundant appetite.
There is much research
being done on Leptin and Ghrelin at this point and it seems
that it may be possible to see drugs available in the future
that will possibly manipulate these hormones in a way that
may be beneficial for people wanting to gain or lose weight.
Here is how Wikipedia defines Leptin:
And here is how Wikipedia defines Ghrelin:
If you want to lose
weight it may be best to forget about the obesity, ghrelin,
connection at this point and focus on a healthy diet and
lifestyle. Perhaps in the future there will be a test to let
us know if we have a problem with our leptin or ghrelin
levels.
I wish for you the best
of health!
