Martial Arts for exercise and weight loss
Where can you go to
build confidence, get in shape, lose weight and learn a
skill for less monthly money than you would usually pay for
a health club membership?
The answer is your local dojo.
Before you go running in
fear, realize that the majority of martial arts studios are
well run, tightly controlled, safe environments. If you are
still hesitant – I am asking you to contact a few schools in
your area and ask if you can observe a class. Most
instructors are more than happy to have potential new
students come and watch a class.
Classes usually include
an exercise period where you will condition the body
aerobically as well as work on your flexibility. I have
witnessed many students come to a class to learn how to
defend themselves and end up losing weight and getting in
great shape. I have also witnessed people who have
transformed themselves not only physically; but mentally as
well. They have gained a new confidence in life that will
benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Karate lessons are
usually in a group setting surrounded by supportive people
who will encourage you to press on when you are tired. This
is a very supportive atmosphere for weight loss.
Keep in mind that some
disciplines may not rely so heavily on physical conditioning
so you certainly do want to witness a workout before
committing to joining a school. Specifically if your goal is
to lose weight and get in shape.
Check your local yellow
pages for “martial arts” and you should find a good
assortment of schools. If you don’t find a good assortment
check “Karate” Tae Kwan Do” “Aikido” “Jiu-Jitsu” or “Judo”
just to name a few. Find an instructor who also teaches
children and you can rest assured that you have found an
instructor who runs a safe school.
Also check around
locally for any instructors who may be offering limited
lessons such as a twelve week class. This is a great way to
get started and see how you will like it. Look for local
demonstrations or competitions, martial arts schools will
sometimes hold these to drum up new business.
Practicing a martial art
is a great way to change your life. One year from now you
could be more confident, in better shape, and weigh a whole
lot less than you do now. Go for it!
