Liquid Fasting Diet
Are Liquid diets safe?
It seems there is a
great deal of interest in liquid fasting diets and as to
whether or not safe liquid diets exist.
Some liquid fasting
diets are medically supervised such as Optifast, HMR, and
Medifast. Some people use products such as meal replacement
powders, slimfast, or Cambridge.
Liquid fasting diets are
usually very low calorie and should not be attempted without
medical supervision. Usually the liquid fasting diet will be
in 3 stages: (1) Very low calorie period (sometimes referred
to as fasting) where you consume liquid supplements. (2) A
sensible meals stage and (3) A maintenance stage. During the
course of the medically supervised liquid fasting diet you
will more than likely be attending a support group and
working on changing long term behaviors.
Some opponents of liquid
fasting diets say that the weight loss is not permanent.
They propose that the weight will be gained back when the
patient returns to normal eating. Some experts also say that
losing 1 pound per week is optimal for safe, long term
weight loss – Liquid fasting diets can cause the patient to
lose 3-4 pounds per week and sometimes leave them feeling
weak and lethargic.
If you are considering a
liquid fasting diet – Consult your physician! Ask your
physician if he/she is aware of any safe liquid diets and
then listen for their answer. Your physician knows your
medical history and should be able to tell you whether a
liquid fasting diet is right for you or not.
Wishing you the best of
health,
Bill
