The gastric pacemaker is an implantable
device placed just under the skin which has small electrical
wires which connect into the wall of the stomach. The result
is that the stomach's nerves are stimulated which tricks the
recipients into thinking their stomach is full. Although the
gastric pacemaker user will feel full - when they do eat
they need to make wise food choices.
Some experts are saying that if you are
considering gastric bypass surgery you should consider a
gastric pacemaker instead. The gastric pacemaker procedure
is said to take roughly an hour and can be performed with
general anesthesia.
The battery is expected to last approximately
seven years at which time you can have the device removed or
replace the battery.
The FDA is expected to approve the device so
it may be available near you soon. The cost of the procedure
is not known yet as well as whether insurance companies will
cover the cost.
