Gastric bypass surgery
Bariatric weight loss surgery
Gastric bypass surgery
is a procedure in which the stomach is made smaller and
allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine.
Because gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller,
the patient will feel full quicker and longer thereby
causing weight loss. Also, bypassing a portion of the small
intestine leads to less calories being absorbed.
The stomach is made
smaller by a band or staples. The band or staples are used
to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. The small
pouch (or smaller stomach) is connected to the middle of the
small intestine bypassing a portion of the small intestine.
Gastric bypass surgery
can involve opening up the abdomen with a large incision or
can be done with a small incision, camera, and small
instruments. This is called laparoscopic.
Because part of your
small intestine is bypassed, some of your food will not be
absorbed therefore some nutrients are also not absorbed.
Gastric bypass surgery may require you to change eating
habits and use nutritional supplementation.
Gastric bypass surgery
is like other weight loss surgeries in that you may have to
meet certain criteria to be a candidate such as a BMI or 40
or above or a life threatening situation that is related to
your obesity.
Gastric bypass surgery
is one of several surgery options for obesity. There are
other weight loss surgeries. Your surgeon will help you
choose the one that best fits your particular needs.
