Can coconut oil help you lose weight?
Seems we have come full
circle when it comes to the role of fat in weight loss.
Used to be that
fat was a dirty word in any shape of the form. Grocery store
shelves were flooded with low fat or no fat foods.
Recently we have been
hearing about the health benefits of some fats such as olive
oil and flax. Even more recently, coconut oil is being
touted as very healthy oil with some added benefits of
helping you lose weight.
Coconut oil is said to
contain less calories than other fats and contribute no more
to weight gain than carbohydrates or protein. The last
sentence contains the key to why coconut oil is being touted
as a weight loss aid – coconut oil contains fewer calories
than other fats.
We all know that we need
fat to survive and be healthy. The coconut oil diet
recommends that you replace all of the refined vegetable
oils in your diet with coconut oil. Use small amounts of
butter and olive oil and also eliminate all shortening and
margarine.
While the jury is still
out on coconut oil for weight loss there is no shortage of
claims for how healthy this oil can be for you. Here are
just a few of the reported benefits of adding coconut oil to
your diet: Helps prevent infections, supports immune system
function, provides energy, keeps skin soft, helps prevent
osteoporosis, and supports healthy metabolic function.
Some of the healthy oils
such as flax are not suitable for cooking – coconut oil is
heat resistant and can be used for some cooking. Coconut oil
has a mild flavor and a long shelf life.
We will update this page
as more news becomes available on the health and weight loss
benefits of coconut oil.
Wishing you the best of health,
Bill
