The benefits of Yerba Mate Tea
Recently Yerba Mate has
gained some attention with health seekers and is showing up
in weight loss formulations, herbal energy formulas, and as
a stand alone tea.
Yerba Mate (pronounced "mahtay")
is made from the leaves of an evergreen holly tree which
grows in South America. Yerba Mate contains xanthines which
are said to be alkaloids in the same family as caffeine.
Some users report that the energy gained from Yerba Mate is
much different from that of coffee or tea in that it does
not make you jittery or stimulated. Some users say that it
is a longer lasting and much more enjoyable energy than
other beverages filled with caffeine.
So what are the benefits
of Yerba Mate tea? Besides the energy you will get from the
caffeine in Yerba Mate – some experts claim powerful
antioxidant effects, blood cleansing, anti-aging, boosting
immunity, body detoxification, controlling appetite, help
with high cholesterol, help with hypertension, and reducing
hay fever and allergy symptoms.
Yerba Mate contains
Vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, Biotin, Choline, Inositol and
a number of minerals. It also contains fatty acids, amino
acids, flavenols, and polyphenols.
I decided to replace my
normal coffee with Yerba Mate tea for a month. The Yerba
Mate tastes very interesting. I would not call it a good
taste but I certainly would not call it repulsive either. I
am drinking the Guayaki brand in tea bags. I am brewing 2
tea bags in a cup at a time and refilling the cup 3 times
before disposing of the tea bags.
I feel some energy and
seem to focus well on my work. That is one thing I find
negative about coffee – If I drink too much – I am
stimulated to the point that it is hard to focus.
More research will have
to be done on whether or not Yerba Mate is good for weight
loss but it seems like the other reported benefits of Yerba
Mate tea may make it worth trying.
Wishing you the best of health,
Bill
